Xavier stood beside her, his flashlight pointed down at Rinaldi's clue, as if reading it again would reveal some new bit of information. "It has to be here," he said, mostly to himself. She agreed. But what if it wasn't? Where did they go from here? That was the real question. Where did she and Xavier go from here? What did - "Shit," Xavier said. She glanced over at him. "Hm?" "Shit. I think we read this wrong. Look." He shoved Rinaldi's poem into her hand and shone the flashlight down on it. "Look at the line about the tree."

Xavier finally turned his gaze to me, his eyes curious yet guarded, focused on the book I held tightly in my hand. "I went to the library to find something to read, and I stumbled upon this book," I explained, holding up the weathered tome. "It's a story I've never heard before, and it sparked my curiosity." "They were pushed out of the system by the other leaders, so they're not part of other packs," Xavier observed, connecting the dots between the ancient history and our present-day societal structure. Just as Xavier was about to walk away, Shena spontaneously restrained his wrist. With a worried look on her face, Shena said to Xavier, "I... apologize. I'm sorry... for what I did..." Xavier looked at Shena's hand on his wrist, then grinned. He let go of Shena's hand gently. "I'll see you tomorrow, Miss Shena. When you see our names spread, you'll have to take responsibility." He looked like he’d just come from the gym, his skin was flushed, and a thin sheen of sweat made the muscles of his chest and arms glisten. His eyes weren't on my face. They were lower, tracking the way the thin shirt draped over my body, lingering on the clear silhouette of my chest before dropping to where the shirt had bunched at my hips.

As if the storm itself was conspiring with him, rain poured heavily, muffling every sound that left my lips. Until I couldn’t speak anymore.
