She was smiling and laughing more… with Dad! In the last video, Mom sat up her own, unaided on the bed. And with a big grin on her face, she smiled radiantly at Dad as she thanked him for bringing her her best dessert…jello. Then looking into the camera, she smilingly said, “Look at me, conquering spoons, my darlings! Your Momma is surely the queen of comebacks!” she winked. The time stamp of the video read 1:07 pm.

“I want to stock up on Snickers, Chips Ahoy and maybe some M&M’s. You know, melts in your mouth, not in your hands.” “Good choice, honey,” Mrs. Montemayor says. “Those will bring you luck because M&M is also our family monogram. Get it? Montemayor.” The mother winks at her daughter and freezes her face like an emoji. Grace groans loudly and Kate and Mikaela laugh. “Yep. You’ve still got the monopoly on mom jokes,” Grace says, shaking her head.

Aaron saw the conflict in me, and told me to go ahead and make all the jokes I wanted. I couldn’t help the “yo’ momma” jokes that immediately came out of my mouth. Aaron’s situation was incredibly sad and tragic. Even so…the idea of Aaron’s mate leaving him out of fear that he was sleeping with his own mother… how do you not make jokes out of that???? When I couldn’t stop making jokes, Aaron decided to tease me that my mate story was only marginally better, having met my mate while wearing a wedding dress.

“Little things make me happy.” “I guess that’s what happens when you’ve experienced jail.” I attempt a joke in a lighter tone and I immediately feel chastened. I hold my breath for her reaction as she studies my expression carefully, but then she surprises us both by laughing. My mother has never laughed at my jokes before. Ever.

The moment Mom said this it was like my world came crumbling. “Mom this is a joke right?”

I explained in a small voice. "Miscounted?" Mom spat, interrupting me. "You're the only one who didn't get anything. She was probably annoyed that you were trying to get one. Why must you be so greedy? You're so embarrassing! Will you only be satisfied when everyone ridicules me for raising such a greedy daughter?" A wave of stress crashed into me. I dug my nails into my arms and scratched myself until my skin turned raw and bloody. However, I didn't feel even an ounce of comfort.

I hesitated, smiling comically before resting my head back on the pillow. "Ehen, even at that... Who are you shy of in this house?" my mom chuckled as she teased -- she was always fond of taunting me so she could have a good laugh. "Mmom!... Like seriously?" I exclaimed startlingly with a surprised look on my face as I laughed - throwing a pillow at her feet. "So mummy can not tell jokes again?" she concluded rhetorically while laughing and was about turning to leave when my room door resounded with brief knockes.

From: Mom [Thu, 9:39 pm] That's okay, you can laugh as much as you want even though you're sad for having a broken heart. I gasped. Mom can turn tables, doesn't she? To: Mom [Thu, 9:41 pm] I am your daughter, mom! I can't believe you can do me dirty! I answered, pasting crying emojis. From: Mom [Thu, 9:42 pm] I'm just joking, haha! I hope you're doing fine, we love and miss you so much!

Momma nudges me with her shoulder and my cheeks burn brighter. “No, I’m having a tropical moment.” I sass back, and she laughs, throwing her head back before she kisses my head and hugs me. “Yeah, right, and I’m the pope.” She says, and I groan at her. “Don’t let your dads or brother, for that matter, find out about your … Tropical moments. You know how they are.” I glare at her and she winks at me, smiling. “Hey Mav, how are you and little Melody finding it here?” Oh just great, did I tell you my momma is the biggest wind up merchant there is out there? No, well yeah, she is.

I reached up and kissed her on the cheek. “How was your day babycakes?” “Momma would you stop calling me that please? It’s so embarrassing.” I pleaded with her as I opened the fridge to look for something to eat. Momma started chuckling while drying off her hands. “That’s my job as your momma; to embarrass the hell out of you.” She was grinning from ear to ear. “Whatever Momma. It’s your story, tell it any way you want to.” I flash her a quick smile while starting to make myself a sandwich.
