“I’m doing this to keep you safe.” She closed her eyes, leaning into my touch. “When will it end?” bulong niya. “When she begs for mercy,” I answered, “and no one—absolutely no one—remembers her name.” Her breath broke into a soft sob, but she didn’t push me away. “Rest now,” I whispered. “Because tomorrow, I start the war.” I looked down at her, my trembling wife, and something inside me locked into place. Sa pagkakataong iyon, muling kumislap ang ngiti niya. Hindi ngiting masaya, kundi ngiting mapanganib. “Their end,” bulong niya, “is my beginning.”

The fear of a man who knew his reign of terror was about to end. I moved towards him, my weapon raised, my heart pounding a war drum against my ribs. The reign of terror was at an end. But the war, the fight for justice, had only just begun.

“You’re his real daughter. Why would you offer to bring him down? What’s your endgame?” Ngumiti si Marga—isang ngiting hindi mo kayang sukatin. “To end the war,” sagot niya. “And win it.”
