Unable to decipher his true intentions, I turned my attention back to my friends, attempting to shake off the awkward encounter. I couldn't help but wonder why our eyes had locked for that brief moment. Was it merely a coincidence, or was there something more? I found myself stealing glances in his direction, searching for some sign that he had felt the same connection. "Hey, I saw that," Klaus murmured, as he leaned closer grinning like an idiot. He knew me better than anyone else, and it was no surprise that he saw me staring at Miles once again. Klaus was the kind of person who never missed a beat, always attentive and observant.

I did not have to turn to see the black mist beside me, and the offer was so enticing that I was salivating to take it. I desired more power. I gritted my teeth and slid over until our shoulders were touching. I could feel the heat coming off him. It felt strange. For two years, I had imagined what it would be like to be near him again. I thought I would feel happy, or maybe even safe. Instead, I just felt a deep, aching sadness. "Look at the camera," Klaus said. He pulled out his phone and held it up.
