He watched his grandfather's weathered fingers show him the rhythm of looping, pulling, securing, as if they were weaving more than just a net—like they were stitching a stubborn piece of the old world onto the new one.
"Naalala ko dati," his tatay began, as he always did, "Gigising kami ng erpat ko nang sobrang aga. Simple lang ang pamumuhay noon. Tinutulungan ko siyang mangisda noon para may makain kami sa araw-araw." His gaze drifted past the gym walls, as if he could see through them, straight to the shoreline. "Ang alat man ng simoy amoy ng hangin sa barrio namin, sariwang sariwa naman iyon dahil sa dami ng puno."
