The Grey Wolf: A Novel Louise Penny Novels & Stories

I mentally begged my bladder to finish relieving itself quickly so that I could hurry back to the cabin. I was just fastening my pants when a low snarl caught my attention. Almost frozen with fear, I slowly looked to my right. There, just a few yards away, stood an enormous snow white wolf. Had I not been so terrified, I’d have delighted in admiring its thick, beautiful coat. Unfortunately, my eyes were locked on the long, solid looking fangs that it displayed.

I frowned, my head turning to meet the bright eyes of another wolf. The wolf was dark colored with patches of white and orange. It's eyes were chocolate brown and glistening with hidden intelligence. I had never seen this particular wolf before, but that wasn't surprising. I didn't know many of the people in our pack, I had been obsessed with Tyler for too long to notice anyone else. "Yeah." The wolf nodded, a soft feminine voice filling my head. "Like the shadows got bigger." "Ignore her." A grey wolf snapped, a low growl coming from it's mouth. "She did nothing to help. Just froze and looked around all terrified."

Unlike what I expected from a wild animal, the wolf only looked at me with a strange sort of understanding in its eyes, and it turned its head to let me look at the wound closer. I placed my hand on its head, feeling the soft lovely fur under my fingers and palms. The wolf was a strange one, I thought, using the watering can to rinse the wound out. It seemed to have intellect if it knew I wouldn’t harm it. I continued cleaning the wound, humming to myself unconsciously. When I was done, I looked into its grey, striking eyes. “Can you hide in the bushes? You need to rest,” I stated gently, brushing its fur with my hand. “I’ll come by to check on you, okay?”

She yelled at the pain of hearing and feeling her bones break and restructure into the werewolf which she had hidden deep within her. Her skin was thick and wild too, and the moment she lifted her head, her eyes had changed, and her muzzle was large, growling aloud at the Phantom before she rushed after it. She moved at a fast pace, striking the Phantom hard around its jaw and its abdomen, throwing it off the ground with all her strength towards a tree. She growled again in the dead of the night, showing off her feats towards the phantom who had cut it short by getting off its feet and jumping on her.

but there's another identity for me which no one knows except me. I write novels under the pen name 'phoenix' My novels are about werewolves attacking humans. Since I don't like werewolves I started writing about them in a bad way to vent out my anger on them. Recently, I've been working on a book named, 'Desire for thirst' in which werewolves attack their prey when they are in rut. My work in this genre has been gaining more exposure because I've made it very clear that I don't like werewolves. I believe people can read this as a novel but in reality the author just wants to expose their readers to the monsters they see in other worlds.

Seeing no one around, she climbed out of the cubby, stretching her sore limbs from being crammed in that spot all night. "We were a lot smaller back then, weren't we?” Hikaru smiled as the memory passed across her mind like she was seeing all of it for the first time. Walking outside in the early, bright, punishing daylight was torture! Wolves were considered as 'Day Blind', her wolf going momentarily blind from being held in total darkness for hours. Until Hikaru's human's sight had gotten used to the light, her wolf's vision cleared and focused as well. There was something strange around where she stood. She heard no birds, no animals, the breeze was actually dead in the air.

Suddenly, the enemy forces pull back, and we all freeze with the uncertainty of what is happening, until a grey wolf with a black muzzle and black tip on his tail stalks forward with a predatory gaze fixed on Alpha Aleksandr. They started by circling each other, but my alpha has always been good at proving his dominance. Today is no different, and he is the first one to attack. He misses the grey wolf’s neck, but takes a chunk of flesh from his shoulder as he flips him over. The grey wolf darts forward in a low attack, but hesitates the moment the alpha is in the air, and he raises up to latch his jaws on to Alpha’s back leg. Fortunately, he didn’t spin around fast enough and was unable t

’ ‘It’s –‘ She stopped and the wolf ahead, sensing our presence, stopped too and then it turned its head and I took a proper look at it. The first wolf I had seen had been my father, a huge black wolf that could not have been real but this one seemed even more unreal. Midnight black fur that glistened even in the grayish day, sharp golden eyes and almost twice the size of my father, such a wolf was staring at me. Then it started to walk my way and I fought the urge to run off. Its presence pressed down on me and Grace hissed. ‘What the hell is he doing filling this place with his scent?’

He could be dead by the time we reach him… Having cut along a number of footpaths through pack, we have passed onto the grass of the fields now, allowing Micco to pick up more speed, and I am suddenly aware of another wolf alongside us, as I can see through Micco’s eyes. A beautiful grey fur with the deepest of brown undertones, and slight white snout. He is almost as large and undoubtedly as strong as Micco. How had we never questioned Aiden before? His wolf was so clearly an Alpha wolf… a mighty fine one too. And clearly able to keep up with Micco.

Where the silver half was molded to form a crescent moon, the gold created a perfectly round sun. Every time I slowed, too busy gawking at the elaborate artwork lining the walls, the wolf at Azrael’s side nudged me with its snout. First of all, the paintings moved. How could I not stop and stare? Second, the legends always said that Orion was the most powerful of the wolf gods, but it wasn’t until now that I actually believed it. It was oh so comforting that he also happened to have the worst attitude. When the wolf bumped me for the fourth time I grunted, “Can you tell your pet to stop pushing me along? Don’t let my perky ass fool you, I’m not cattle.”
