The development arcs in that series feel like watching someone assemble a puzzle where the picture keeps changing. At the start, 'Throne of Glass' gives us Celaena, who's basically a traumatized celebrity assassin playing a deadly game show for her freedom. The arc from weapon to queen is the big one, but it's so messy and human. She spends so much time being arrogant to cover the fear, then guilt-ridden over the people she's lost, and finally learning that power isn't about being the deadliest person in the room—it's about building something that lasts. The way she slowly accepts her Fae heritage isn't just a power-up; it's about connecting to a history and a world larger than her own pain.

Then there's Chaol. Oh, man, his journey frustrated me to no end sometimes, but in a way that felt real. He begins as the honorable captain, his identity completely tied to serving the crown. His whole worldview shatters when he realizes the king he served is pure evil, and the woman he loves is Fae, his kingdom's ancient enemy. His arc is a brutal lesson in unlearning prejudice and redefining duty and honor from the ground up. His later story in 'Tower of Dawn' is essentially a physical and spiritual rehab, which some found slow but I thought was necessary for a character broken that completely.

Dorian’s transformation is quieter but just as radical. He goes from the charming, somewhat spoiled prince who wants to avoid responsibility to a man carrying the literal demon of his father's legacy inside him. Gaining raw magic changes him, but the real development is in how he learns to wield it not as a curse but as a tool for protection, and how he steps into a leadership role defined by empathy rather than birthright. The contrast between the carefree boy in the first book and the weary, kind king by the end is staggering.

Even the side characters have phenomenal arcs. Manon Blackbeak’s is probably my favorite—from an iron-hearted witch who views humans as cattle to a leader who finds her humanity through one broken wolf and her own displaced heir. It’s a masterclass in thawing a character who’s been frozen in cruelty. I’m still not over the Thirteen.

This series order thing always trips people up. The core order is 'Throne of Glass', 'Crown of Midnight', 'Heir of Fire', 'Queen of Shadows', 'Empire of Storms', 'Tower of Dawn', and finally 'Kingdom of Ash'. The big debate is about the prequel collection, 'The Assassin's Blade'. Some say read it first for chronological backstory, but I was glad I didn't.

I started with 'Throne of Glass' and got hooked on Celaena’s attitude and the immediate plot. Going back to the prequel after book three, 'Heir of Fire', made those stories hit way harder emotionally. You understand the weight of the names and faces she remembers. Reading it first would have softened some of the mystery and impact, I think. The tandem read of 'Empire of Storms' and 'Tower of Dawn' is a whole other level of commitment I personally skipped, but I’ve heard it smooths out the parallel timelines. I just read them in published order and was fine.

So I gave the whole series a shot after my book club insisted, and honestly? It started strong enough with the assassin premise in 'Throne of Glass', but somewhere around the middle, the sheer number of POV characters and sprawling plotlines just lost me. I felt like I was reading a different series by the end. The fae, the gods, the multiple kingdoms—it felt like the core of Celaena's character got diluted. I pushed through 'Kingdom of Ash' out of obligation more than anything. If you're a fantasy completionist who doesn't mind a massive, sometimes messy, expansion from a tight beginning, maybe. I found the romance subplots became a bit overwhelming for my taste compared to the political intrigue I initially signed up for.

That said, my sister adores the found family vibes and the later books, especially the Manon chapters, so tastes clearly differ. The world-building is undeniably vast, just not always to my personal preference.
