Something softened in his expression. “He already took enough, didn’t he?”
I didn’t answer. I didn’t have to.
The waiter placed two cups of coffee between us, steam rising like thin ghosts. For a moment, the world outside didn’t exist.
“You ever wonder,” I asked, stirring my drink, “if we’re doing the right thing? If revenge just makes us the same as him?”
Lucas leaned back, eyes thoughtful. “Maybe. But sometimes doing what’s right starts with doing what’s necessary.”
