She nodded and disappeared into the labyrinth of bookshelves. Minutes turned into what felt like hours as I anxiously awaited her return. My heart raced with anticipation, mingled with a hint of doubt. What if there was nothing here? What if the answers I sought had vanished into the mists of time? It smelt of old papers, and I couldn't help but inhale the scent. Dark wooden tables with cushioned seats were arranged in the library. Keeping my head down, I check the corner in case there are cameras lurking in here. I didn’t notice any blinking, but that didn't put me at ease. The Auder's mansion has this eerie quality. I was on high alert all the time. I only let go when Carlo was around; maybe that was a mistake too. I pulled out a paperback about the light in the mind. It was my first time hearing about it. Danger. I turned. And there she was. The librarian. Standing at the door, her frail frame outlined by the torchlight. Her eyes wide, mouth parted in shock. I stiffened, caught mid-theft like a pup with blood on his muzzle. “Well,” I said dryly, closing the book with exaggerated calm. “This is awkward.” Her lips trembled. “W-who are you? What are you doing...” I lifted a hand. “Shhh. I’m the friendly neighborhood bookworm. Here to… improve my literacy.”

He didn’t want the bond. That shit ended today. He turned back to walk to the middle of the atrium, to the librarian’s desk and pulled a piece of paper from his pocket. Miss Donovan was a vampire who had been the librarian here probably since the old building had been built. She knew everything about everything and would know that one of the books on his list had nothing to do with any of his subjects. “I need these books and others on those subjects,” he told her. Miss Donovan didn’t cower. She was probably one of the few people who didn’t reek of fear when he spoke to them. She took the paper from him without a word and started typing something on her computer.

I responded, I continued with the search burying my eyes back into the shelf again. The old library was loaded with different books. Histories of how the kings came from the forest to this land and how it was inhabited by werewolves. In the pure-blood werewolf image, I saw a small book without the name of the author on it. The author wrote that he had a secret about the palace that no one knew. I took the book and hid it in my clothes, then continued my search by the time I got the books I thought might be helpful. I went to Liam to help him but he was almost done too by the time I got to him.

Again I had the disturbing thought that there had to be a singular person coordinating their movements… Or an organization. I was wasting time pondering when the answers could be right here in front of me. I cracked my knuckles and watched the men squirm as they watched me approach. “Gentlemen,” my tone suggested I thought of them as anything but, “have either of you ever spent much time in a library?” Their blank and confused expressions indicated this was exceedingly unlikely. “Well, when one needs information, more scholarly folks would go to the library and crack open the spines of some books until they found what they needed.” I gave my most sinister grin, “I confess that I use a simila
