The SUV behind them slammed on its brakes, tires smoking as it crashed violently into the concrete barriers, unable to follow.
Two hours later, the city was nothing but a distant smudge on the horizon. The highway had turned into a winding provincial road lined with towering palm trees, the air smelling of salt and wet earth.
They stopped at a secluded, cliffside overlooking the roaring Pacific Ocean. The storm of the city was gone, replaced by the peaceful crashing of the waves below.
