Then there's the engineer, I think his name was Isaac, the practical guy keeping the ship from flying apart. The pilot, Jansen, handles the actual navigation and piloting through all the chaos.

But for me, the most interesting dynamic wasn't just the techies. There's a character back on Earth, maybe a rival CEO or a government liaison, whose scenes really ground the story in the political and financial fallout of what Toby's doing. It's a great mix of visionary dreamers and the people who have to clean up after them. The book spends a lot of time on the tension between the crew's expertise and Toby's volatile leadership, which is where most of the character conflict comes from.

Finally got around to 'Delta V' by Daniel Suarez after seeing it recommended for its hard sci-fi cred. I've bounced off a lot of near-future stuff that feels like a tech spec disguised as a novel, but this one actually pulled me in. The set-up—a private asteroid mining mission funded by a reality show—sounds gimmicky, but Suarez uses it to explore the brutal, unglamorous physics of space travel in a way that feels tangible. It's less about whiz-bang tech and more about problem-solving with duct tape and math under insane pressure. The middle section, once they're actually out there, had me completely hooked. I will say the ending felt a bit rushed, like he was setting up for a sequel, which was a slight letdown. Still, if you're into the engineering puzzle side of sci-fi, like Andy Weir's stuff but with a darker corporate edge, it's absolutely worthwhile.

My one caveat is that the characters aren't super deep. They're competent professionals, which works for the plot, but don't go in expecting profound emotional arcs. It's a book about a mission, first and foremost.

The 'Delta V' of the title isn’t just a physics term; it’s the financial and personal velocity needed to break free from gravity wells of debt and shareholder expectation. Made me look at my monthly budget with a weird sense of cosmic recognition.
