서준태의 첫사랑이 실수로 사무실에 갇히게 된 날, 모든 것이 예상치 못한 방향으로 흘러갔다. 서준태는 내가 그 일에 연루된 것처럼 보이자 분노가 치밀어 올라 나를 폐기된 냉동창고에 가두었다. “혜선이가 너 때문에 얼마나 고생했는지, 직접 겪어봐야 정신을 차리겠지.” 서준태의 눈빛은 차가웠고, 내게 물 한 잔만 던져주고는 곧바로 문을 닫았다. 그러나 그곳은 단순한 폐기된 냉동창고가 아니었다. 여전히 작동할 수 있는 냉동창고였고, 서준태가 떠난 후 기계는 곧바로 작동을 시작했다. 찬 기운이 내 몸을 파고들었고, 나는 그 안에서 떨며 몸부림쳤다. 필사적으로 문을 두드리고, 도움을 요청했지만, 고요함 속에서 돌아오는 건 내 숨소리뿐이었다. 벽과 문에 남은 피 묻은 손자국들이 이곳에서 내가 겪은 고통을 말해주고 있었다. 7일 후, 서준태는 내가 용서를 구할 것이라며 창고의 문을 열었다. 그러나 나는 시체가 되어 얼음 속에 갇혀 있었다.

결혼 전부터 나는 늘 남편 민해에게 그의 형수님, 문소리가 대단한 분이라는 얘기를 자주 들었다. “형수님과는 절대 다투지 마. 잘 지내야 해.” 남편의 당부가 귓가에 맴돌던 결혼 후 첫 설날. 나는 시댁에서 처음으로 명절을 맞이하며 하루 종일 부엌에서 음식 준비로 바빴다. 열 명이 넘는 가족을 위해 손 하나 까딱하지 않는 시댁 식구들 대신, 홀로 땀을 뻘뻘 흘리며 명절 음식을 차렸다. 거실에서는 웃고 떠들며 과일을 먹는 가족들의 웃음소리가 들려왔다. 하지만 저녁이 되자 느긋하게 등장한 남편의 큰형 부부. 그때까지도 나는 몰랐다. 내 자리가 없을 줄은. 어색하게 선 채 자리를 찾으려던 내 앞에서, 남편의 형수 문소리가 비웃듯 입을 열었다. “동서, 현모양처라면서요? 착하고 잘 지낸다더니... 그런데 음식은 별로네요?” 나는 속에서 울컥하는 분노를 억누르며 무언가 말하려는 순간, 문소리는 시어머니를 향해 태연하게 덧붙였다. “앞으로는 어머님께서 음식을 하시는 게 좋겠어요. 어머님 음식이 훨씬 맛있잖아요.”

아주머니가 나를 소파에 묶어놓고 아빠랑 같이 발렌타인데이트를 나갔다. 나는 총 세 번 전화를 걸었다. “아주머니, 제발 나 좀 풀어줘요. 저 정말 힘들어요.” 하지만 아주머니는 아빠와 엄마를 갈라놓는 데 바빠서 조금만 더 참으라고 했다. “아빠, 저 배고파 죽겠어요. 와서 밥 좀 해주면 안 돼요?” 아빠는 아내를 붙잡으러 다니느라 바빠서 돈만 보내고 해결하라고 했다. “엄마, 저 진짜 죽을 것 같아요. 한 번만 보러 와주세요...” 냉정한 엄마의 목소리가 들렸다. “너 네 아주머니를 엄마라고 부르기로 했잖아?” 뚝, 전화가 끊겼다. 결국 나는 더럽고 냄새 나는 배설물 속에서 굶어 죽었다.

나는 누군가가 뿌린 유산을 맞고, 지하실에서 죽었다. 가족들은 나를 알아보지 못했고, 신고조차 하지 않았다. 엄마는 오랫동안 사용하지 않았던 수술용 칼을 들어, 내 살과 뼈를 분리해 냈다. 아빠는 흥분한 표정으로 내 뼈대를 석고 속에 묻어 넣어 정교한 석고 조각상을 만들었다. 언니는 그 조각상을 가지고 수많은 상을 휩쓸며 모두가 칭송하는 천재 소녀가 되었다. 그런데, 조각상이 산산조각이 나면서 안에 숨겨져 있던 반쯤 잘린 손가락이 드러났다. 이에 그들은 혼란에 빠졌다.

오철준은 여섯 살이 되던 해에 100원을 훔쳤다. 전남편이 벨트를 꺼낼 때면 사람을 때려죽이려 하곤 했다. 난 철준을 내 몸 뒤로 감싸고 모든 매를 대신 맞았다. 그 후 전남편은 예상치 못한 사고로 사망했고 나와 철준은 서로 의지하며 살아갔다. 옆집 이웃이 나를 남편 잡아먹은 년이라고 욕하자 철준은 그 집 개를 독살해 버렸다. 어떤 고객이 나를 괴롭히려 할 때 철준은 그 사람을 하반신 불구로 만들어 버렸다. 철준은 평생 장가 가지 않고 나를 지켜주겠다고 했다. 난 철준이 너무 고집스럽다고 생각했다. 난 철준이 자신만의 생활을 되찾을 수 있기를 바랬다. 출국한 지 3년, 마침내 철준이 인생의 진정한 사랑을 찾았다는 소식을 들었다. 난 흥분된 마음으로 귀국했지만 예비 며느리에게 불륜녀로 오해를 받았다. 주민정은 사람들을 데리고 공항에서 나를 가로 막았다. “나이를 이렇게 처먹고 불륜녀 짓거리를 하다니! 쪽팔린 줄도 모르는 건가?” 민정은 사람들 앞에서 내 옷을 벗겼다. 그리고 나에게 황산을 먹여 내 목과 얼굴을 망가뜨렸다. 숨이 거의 끊어질 무렵 난 민정에게 말했다. “나는 철준의 어머니야.” 하지만 민정은 친자 확인서를 내 앞에 뿌렸다. “사람 잘못 해칠까 봐 난 이미 똑똑히 조사도 해봤어.” 하지만 민정은 내가 철준의 새 엄마라는 걸 몰랐다.
