I think the premise is pretty straightforward on the surface, but it's the execution and character dynamic that make it work. The plot kicks off with Hannah Wells, this super driven student who needs to ace a philosophy class to keep her scholarship. She ends up making a deal with Garrett Graham, the college hockey star who's failing the class—she'll tutor him if he pretends to be her boyfriend to make her ex jealous.
Of course, the fake dating trope does its thing, and they catch feelings. What I found more interesting than the romance itself was the exploration of Garrett's backstory and his complicated relationship with his family. Hannah's past trauma with assault is handled with a weight that adds a serious layer to what could have been just a fluffy read. The real plot, for me, wasn't whether they'd get together, but how they'd navigate their individual baggage to build something real.
It’s a solid entry in the 'Off-Campus' series, though I sometimes wonder if the hockey team setting overshadows the quieter character moments.
