Nilingon ko si Grace matapos kong magpaalam kay Pastor Ivan at Pastora Ellen. "Akala ko po ba ay sabay-sabay tayong magb-breakfast ngayon sa labas?" Ginulo ko ang buhok nito. "Sumabay ka na lang muna kay Lucas." Sumimangot agad siya. "Tinawagan ako ni Luna, sabay daw kami ngayon."

The all-night vigil at the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Ibadan was reaching its peak intensity. It was well past 2 AM. The main auditorium vibrated with loud, passionate prayers, choruses of “Oluwa mi” and “alagbara” rising and falling like waves. Tambourines shook furiously while sharp shouts of “Fire! Fire!!” pierced the air. The scent of anointed oil, sweat, and incense hung thick in the humid night.

This is the Philippines nightly mass held in the predominantly Catholic communities around two weeks before Christmas. Not only is it well known, but it’s a culture that’s deeply ingrained into almost all Filipino Catholics. But back to the question…. A lot of answers come to mind, right? But for one of our acquaintances who lived within a well-known campus community, his main reason for attending these church services was to look for babes to ask out on a date. Yup, you read this right…

Nasa huli talaga ang pagsisisi. Alas diyes na sa umaga nang tuluyan naming marating ang tuktok. Pagkatapos non ay nagkaroon pa ng misa. Halos mapuno ang simbahan sa dami ng mga mag-aaral na katulad namin na dumalo. Halo-halo at karamihan ay galing sa Catholic School. Saktong mag-aalas dose na nang matapos ang misa.
