A Step Back
With a thud, they dropped to their knees.
Through the cold iron door, I could hear their frantic cries.
“Henry! Mom and Dad were wrong!”
“Henry! I was wrong! Please forgive me! Save me!”
I leaned against the door and listened quietly.
These voices were once my most cherished source of warmth.
Now they only made me feel disgusted.
After a long moment, I looked at them outside and said coldly, just two words, “Get out.”
