Kisah dalam novel ini terinspirasi dari cerita nyata yang terjadi sekitar tahun 80'an. Dimana pada saat itu judi Porkas/SDSB sedang marak dan digandrungi masyarakat. Basri (bukan nama sebenarnya) adalah seorang lelaki miskin dan bekerja sebagai buruh serabutan. Memiliki seorang istri dan dua anak dalam kondisi kesulitan perekonomian keluarga, akhirnya terpaksa harus mengambil jalan pintas demi membahagiakan keluarganya. Masa lalu kelam serta didikan orang tua yang keras, membajakan hati laki-laki dalam satu tekad yang bulat. Dia rela melakukan ritual gila demi menggapai kekayaan, yakni membongkar sebuah kuburan. Apa yang dicari? Seutas tali pengikat mayat. Dengan benda itulah, Basri sukses mendapatkan apa yang dia impikan. Cukup sampai di sini? Tidak. Kain itu cuma benda biasa yang mirip dengan pernak-pernik murahan yang dijual di pasar loak. Namun, mereka malah sama-sama melepas lencana tembaga itu dan menggantinya dengan kain murahan yang diberikan Ella. Mia tidak mengatakan apa pun. Dia hanya diam-diam menyimpan foto lama mereka yang tercetak di sebuah koran usang. Malam itu juga, dia menelepon ayahnya yang jauh di Sisilia. Nada bicaranya sangat tenang saat berkata, "Papa, aku menerima pernikahan politik ini."
