Through 'Noli Me Tangere' and 'El Filibusterismo', ginising niya ang damdaming makabayan ng mga Pilipino. His execution in 1896 became a catalyst for the Philippine Revolution.
Andres Bonifacio, the Supremo of the Katipunan, embodied grassroots heroism. Unlike Rizal's intellectual approach, Bonifacio led an armed revolution. His courage in organizing the Katipunan and initiating the revolt against Spain shows a different but equally vital form of heroism.
In modern times, we have people like Efren Peñaflorida, the CNN Hero of the Year in 2009, who brought education to slum areas through his 'Kariton Classroom'. His quiet, persistent activism proves heroism doesn't always require grand gestures.
Heroism comes in many forms - from Lapu-Lapu's warrior spirit to Peñaflorida's compassionate service. What unites them is their selfless love for the Philippines and its people.
