I kept my head on his shoulder to hide how fast my heart was actually beating. His shoulder felt solid, warm, real—something to hold onto when everything else felt like it could dissolve into shadows at any moment.
To him, I probably looked calm, like I wasn’t worried at all, like this was just another night passing time together. But inside I was counting every second, every shift in the air, every small change in the temperature that told me they were drawing closer.
